How to use Essay Outline Builder

Type your points one per line and indent sub-points beneath their parent. The formatted I, A, 1, a outline builds live beside your input, ready to copy into your essay plan.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set the levels?

Indent with tabs or spaces. Every two spaces or one tab moves a point down one level, so a top-level heading gets a Roman numeral, its children get capital letters, then Arabic numbers, then lowercase letters, then lowercase Roman numerals.

What numbering does it use?

The standard alphanumeric outline used across US and UK academic writing: I, II, III for main sections, A, B, C for subsections, 1, 2, 3 below that, then a, b, c and i, ii, iii. Numbering restarts correctly inside each parent.

Can I paste it into Word?

Yes. The output is plain text with real indentation, so it pastes cleanly into Word, Google Docs or any editor without bringing hidden list formatting with it.
