How to use Citation Generator

Choose the source type, fill in the author, year, title and publication details you have, and the APA, MLA and Chicago versions build as you type. Copy the style your department asks for straight into your reference list.

Frequently asked questions

Which styles and source types are supported?

APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition and Chicago notes-bibliography style, each for books, journal articles, websites, chapters in edited books and online videos. All three formatted versions are generated at once so you can compare them.

How does it handle multiple authors?

Each style has its own rule and the generator applies it. APA lists up to twenty authors with an ampersand before the last, MLA names the first author then 'et al.' from three authors upward, and Chicago inverts only the first author and uses 'and' before the last.

Are the italics included when I copy?

The on-screen reference shows italics exactly where the style requires them, and the copy button gives you plain text. Paste it into your document and re-apply italics to the title, or paste with formatting into a word processor that keeps it.
