How to use Bibliography Builder

Add each source with its type, authors, year, title and publication details, then choose your style. The full alphabetised reference list is generated below, ready to copy or download as a text file.

Frequently asked questions

How is the list ordered?

Alphabetically by the first author's surname, which is what APA, MLA and Chicago all require for a reference list. Sources with no author are alphabetised by title, again following the published rules.

Are my sources saved?

Your list is kept in this browser's local storage, so it survives a refresh and is still there next time you open the tool on the same device. Nothing is uploaded, so clearing browser data or moving to another computer will lose it — export the list when you are done.

Can I switch styles after adding sources?

Yes. Sources are stored as structured fields, not as formatted text, so switching between APA, MLA and Chicago instantly reformats the whole list without you re-typing anything.
