How to use the countdown to date

  1. Type a name in Event, such as “the product launch” or “Mum’s birthday”. It is used in the summary sentence, so write it the way it should read after “until”.
  2. Pick the Target date and time (your time zone).
  3. Watch the four boxes, days, hours, minutes and seconds, which update once a second.
  4. Press Copy summary to copy the sentence under the boxes.

What it does and when to use it

A countdown turns a date into something you can feel: “83 days” is clearer than “25 December”. Use it for a launch or deadline at work, an exam, a wedding, a trip, a contract end date, or the start of a sale. Leave the page open on a second screen as a simple visual timer, or copy the summary into a team chat each morning.

For the number of days between two dates without a live display, try the date difference calculator. To put the event into calendars, make an .ics file, and to plan the weeks leading up to it, print a monthly calendar.

How it works

The tool takes the difference between the target and now in whole seconds, then splits it into days of 86,400 seconds, hours of 3,600 seconds and minutes of 60 seconds, with the rest as seconds. If the difference is negative the event is in the past and the same parts count up.

The summary sentence lists the days, hours and minutes, leaving out any that are zero. Seconds are added only when less than an hour remains, so the sentence stays short until the final hour. When the moment arrives, it reads “the product launch is now.”

Worked examples

These sentences come from the tool’s own function, measured from a fixed starting time instead of the live clock.

A holiday launch. From 2 October 2026 at 12:00 to 25 December 2026 at 00:00:

83 days, 12 hours until the product launch.

The minutes part is zero, so it is left out.

A missed deadline. Event “the deadline”, target 1 October 2026 at 09:00, measured on 2 October at 09:30:

the deadline was 1 day, 30 minutes ago.

An exam next summer. Event “the exam”, target 1 June 2027 at 09:00, measured on 8 October 2026 at 18:45: 235 days, 14 hours, 15 minutes until the exam.

The last minute. Event “lunch”, one minute before 12:30: 1 minute, 0 seconds until lunch.

Limits and tips

  • Nothing is saved. Reloading the page brings back the default event, so copy the summary if you need it later.
  • The countdown is only as accurate as your device clock.
  • For a stopwatch-style timer of minutes and seconds, the countdown timer is a better fit.

Frequently asked questions

Which time zone does the countdown use?
Your device's time zone. The date and time you pick are read as local time, and the countdown runs against your device clock, so someone in another country sees the time left to the same clock time in their own zone.
What happens when the date has passed?
The counter keeps running upwards and the summary changes to past tense, for example "the deadline was 1 day, 30 minutes ago. (counting up)". This is handy for tracking how long ago something happened.
Can I share the countdown as a link?
No. The page does not store your event in a link. Use Copy summary to paste the sentence into a message, or send an .ics invite so the date lands in other people's calendars.
Does the countdown include weekends?
Yes. It counts every calendar day and hour. To count only weekdays, use a business-days calculator instead.
Will the countdown be exact across a clock change?
The live counter measures real elapsed time, so when clocks move for daylight saving the hours left can differ by one from a simple wall-clock subtraction. Over days and weeks this does not matter.
