How to use the click-to-call link generator

1. Enter the number in Phone number (international format), such as +44 20 7946 0958.
2. Add an Extension (optional) if callers should reach a particular desk.
3. Edit Link text. It does not follow the number field, so type your own words.
4. Keep QR code ticked to get a PNG and an SVG code that dials the number when scanned.
5. Copy the Link or the HTML anchor into your website, email signature or booking page.

What it does and when to use it

On a mobile page, a phone number that is only text forces people to copy it or remember it. A tel link makes the number a button: one tap opens the phone’s dialler with the number already entered. It suits contact pages, “Call now” buttons, emergency or out-of-hours lines, and the footer of a mobile site.

The QR code is handy on printed flyers, shop windows and vehicle signs, where people can scan instead of typing. To give people more ways to reach you, add a WhatsApp chat link or an SMS link, or offer your full details as a vCard contact file.

How it works

RFC 3966, the tel standard, says a global number starts with + followed by the country code and the national number, with no spaces. The tool writes exactly that: tel: plus the cleaned number. Letters in the number, as in a vanity number, become keypad digits (ABC = 2 … WXYZ = 9), and a note shows the conversion. If you fill in an extension, its digits are added as ;ext=204. Letters and other symbols in the extension are dropped.

If the cleaned number does not start with +, the link is still made, but a warning asks you to use the international format. A domestic number such as 020 7946 0958 dials correctly inside its own country only. The QR code holds the full tel link with medium error correction. Nothing is uploaded.

Worked examples

London office (the preset). +44 20 7946 0958 gives the link tel:+442079460958 and this HTML:

With QR code on, the PNG for this link is 290 pixels square.

Adding an extension. The same number with extension 204:

Domestic format. 020 7946 0958 with link text “Call the office” produces tel:02079460958 and the warning “Use the international format (+country code) so the link dials correctly from any country.”

Limits and tips

• The tool checks format, not whether the number exists. Tap the finished link on your own phone once.
• Write the number visibly next to the button for desktop visitors and for people who prefer to dial manually.
• Use the SVG code for print. It stays sharp at any size, while the PNG has a fixed pixel size.
