Glitch text generator — Zalgo-style corrupted letters with a repeatable pattern

How to use the glitch text generator

  1. Type a short word or phrase into Your text (the sample is “Glitch”).
  2. Drag Intensity from 1 (subtle) to 10 (heavy). The default is 4.
  3. Choose the layers: Marks above and Marks below are on by default; tick Marks through to add strokes across the letters.
  4. Change Variation to get a different random pattern, or keep it to repeat a result.
  5. Press Copy under Styled text.

What it does and when to use it

Glitch or “Zalgo” text looks like a corrupted screen or a haunted message. It is popular for horror stories, Halloween posts, game names, villain dialogue in role-play and meme captions. One or two glitched words in a normal sentence usually work better than a whole paragraph.

For a cleaner effect, a single strikethrough or slashthrough line through each letter may be enough. The light glitch preset also appears with every other style in fancy text in all styles.

How it works

All the marks come from the Combining Diacritical Marks block (U+0300–U+036F). They are accents with no width of their own, designed to sit on the letter before them. The tool keeps three lists: marks that sit above (graves, tildes and small letters such as ͣ), marks that cut through (strokes like ̵ and ̸), and marks that hang below (dots, rings, lines).

For every visible character that is not a space, the tool adds 0 to intensity marks from the “above” list, 0 to intensity from the “below” list and, if ticked, 0 to one third of the intensity (rounded up) from the “through” list. At intensity 10 with all three layers, one letter can carry up to 24 marks. The random choices come from a small seeded generator, so the Variation number fixes the whole pattern.

Worked examples

All from the tool’s own function:

  • Run, intensity 2, Variation 1 → R͚̀u̪͚̎͊ǹ. Three letters gained seven marks.
  • Run, intensity 2, Variation 2 → a different pattern of seven marks on the same letters, showing how the seed changes the look while the strength stays the same.
  • ok, intensity 3, Variation 9, Marks above off → only the k gets marks, three of them below the line; the o drew zero.

Limits and tips

  • Accessibility. Glitch text is hard for everyone to read and worse for screen reader users: some readers announce every mark by name, others skip the word. It also hides the word from search. Use it for mood, never for instructions or key information.
  • Character limits fill fast: each mark is a character, so a five-letter word at intensity 10 can exceed 100.
  • Generation runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Variation number do?
It is the seed for the random pattern. The same text, intensity, checkboxes and Variation always give exactly the same output, so you can recreate a result later. Change the number (1 to 99,999) for a different pattern.
Why did some letters get no marks?
For each letter the tool picks a random count from zero up to the intensity, separately for each layer. At low intensity zero comes up often, so some letters stay clean. Raise the intensity or try another Variation.
Why does the text spill over the lines above and below?
The marks stack vertically and most fonts let them grow beyond the line height. That overflow is what makes Zalgo text look broken. Use intensity 1–3 if it must stay readable.
Can glitch text break a website or app?
It will not harm anything, but heavy stacks can cover nearby text, and some sites trim the marks or refuse the post. Test with a short word first.
How do I remove the glitch later?
Keep your original text. The marks are invisible characters stuck to each letter, and deleting them by hand is slow.
