Double underline text — two lines under any word you paste

How to use the double underline generator

1. Type the word, phrase or number into Your text.
2. Keep Also mark spaces ticked for an unbroken line, or untick it to leave gaps between words.
3. Look at Styled text and press Copy.

What it does and when to use it

A double underline is stronger than a single one. In plain text it can mark a grand total in an expense message, the final answer in homework shared by chat, or a heading in a plain-text email or forum post. Because the lines are characters, not formatting, they stay when pasted.

How it works

After each character you see, the tool adds U+0333 COMBINING DOUBLE LOW LINE from the Combining Diacritical Marks block. The mark has no width; your font draws it under the preceding character, and neighbouring marks meet to form the line. With Also mark spaces unticked, spaces and tabs get no mark. Line breaks never get one.

U+0333 is a sibling of U+0332 (the single low line). Font designers treat it as an extra, so the quality of the double line varies more between fonts than the single underline does.

Worked examples

All three from the tool’s own function:

• Total due with the defaults → T̳o̳t̳a̳l̳ ̳d̳u̳e̳. The lines run under the space too.
• The same text with Also mark spaces off → T̳o̳t̳a̳l̳ d̳u̳e̳, two separately underlined words.
• 1,250.00 → 1̳,̳2̳5̳0̳.̳0̳0̳. The comma and decimal point are marked as well, so the figure reads as one underlined total.

Limits and tips

• Readers using assistive tech. A screen reader might read the digits normally, or might add “combining double low line” after each one, which makes a simple total very hard to follow. Search may not find the marked word. Say the important number in plain text as well.
• Character counts double. Each mark is a character, so 1,250.00 becomes 16 characters.
• Not for links or usernames, which do not accept combining marks.
• The marks are added in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
