How to use the Discord text formatter

1. Type your message in Message.
2. Tick any of Bold (on by default), Italic, Underline, Strikethrough and Spoiler.
3. Optionally choose a Heading size or Subtext, and a Block: Quote, Inline code or Code block.
4. For colour, choose a Text colour (ANSI) and/or Background (ANSI).
5. Press Copy on Paste into Discord and paste it into the message box.

What it does and when to use it

Discord formats messages with Markdown symbols. They are easy to forget and easy to nest wrongly, especially the ANSI escape codes needed for coloured text. This tool assembles the markup in the right order so server announcements, rules channels and event posts look the way you planned.

For a boxed notice that keeps its shape, make it with Unicode text art and paste it with Block set to Code block. For plain-text places outside Discord, the underline and strikethrough generators build the line into the characters instead.

How it works

Without colour, the tool wraps your text from the inside out: ~~ for strikethrough, * for italic, ** for bold, __ for underline and || for spoiler. It then adds #, ##, ### or -# to the start of each line for headings, and > for a quote. Inline code puts one backtick on each side and Code block puts three, and both skip all other styling because Markdown does not work in code.

With a colour chosen, the output becomes a code block marked ansi. Each line starts with an escape sequence such as ESC[1;31m (bold, red) and ends with ESC[0m (reset). Text colours use codes 30–37 (Grey, Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, Pink, Cyan, White) and backgrounds 40–47, listed as ANSI 40 to ANSI 47.

Worked examples

Outputs from the tool’s own function:

• Raid at 9, Bold, Medium heading → ## **Raid at 9**.
• Two lines, Italic only, Quote → > *line one and > line two*. The quote marker goes on every line.
• Server down, Bold, Underline, Yellow text, background ANSI 41 → an ansi block whose line starts with the escape character and [1;4;41;33m, then Server down.
• use `npm i` with Inline code → `use ˋnpm iˋ`.

Limits and tips

• Several lines. Bold, italic and the other markers are applied to each non-empty line separately, so each line renders on its own, with or without a heading #.
• Spoiler hides all of your text until a reader clicks it, so post a plain line before it if people need context.
• The markup is built in your browser; nothing is sent to Discord or anywhere else.
