How to use the underline text generator
- Type or paste your text in Your text.
- Leave Also mark spaces ticked for one continuous line, or untick it to underline word by word.
- Look at Styled text; it updates as you type.
- Press Copy and paste it where you need it.
What it does and when to use it
Underline is normally formatting, which most plain-text fields throw away. This tool builds the line into the text instead. It is handy for a heading in a profile, a highlighted rule in a group chat, or a title inside a code comment. It works on any script, not only Latin letters, because the mark is added after whatever character you type.
For a heavier line try the double underline generator. A line above the letters is the overline generator, and a line through them is the strikethrough generator.
How it works
The tool splits your text into user-visible characters, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one, and appends U+0332 COMBINING LOW LINE after each one. U+0332 lives in the Combining Diacritical Marks block (U+0300–U+036F). A combining mark has no width of its own; the font draws it under the character before it. Line breaks are never marked, so a multi-line paste keeps its shape.
Worked examples
From the tool’s own function:
Sale ends todaywith the default settings becomesS̲a̲l̲e̲ ̲e̲n̲d̲s̲ ̲t̲o̲d̲a̲y̲, one unbroken line.- The same text with Also mark spaces unticked becomes
S̲a̲l̲e̲ e̲n̲d̲s̲ t̲o̲d̲a̲y̲, three separate underlines. gypbecomesg̲y̲p̲. The line runs through the tails of g, y and p, as a real underline would in many fonts.
Limits and tips
- Accessibility. A screen reader will usually read the letters, but some announce “combining low line” after each one, which turns a short phrase into a long, confusing list. Search boxes may also fail to find the words. Underline decoration, not information people must read or search for.
- Emoji and wide characters. The mark is attached to them too, but many fonts place it badly under emoji or Chinese and Japanese characters.
- Usernames and URLs do not accept combining marks; keep them plain.
- Everything happens in your browser; the text is not uploaded.
