How to use JEE Main Photo Resizer
- Choose Photo or Signature under What are you uploading?.
- Pick the file. For the photo, use a recent colour picture with a white background.
- Leave Fit to the size and Keep which part when cropping as they are; JEE (Main) gives no pixel size, so they are not used.
- Tick If the file is below the minimum KB, pad it if the result might be under 10 KB.
- Press Resize for upload. The Check against the rules table shows the file size against the range.
- Download, then do the other item.
The official rules (checked 2026-10-02)
From the NTA’s JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin:
| Photo | Signature | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | JPG/JPEG | JPG/JPEG |
| File size | 10 KB to 200 KB | 10 KB to 100 KB |
| Pixel size | Not specified | Not specified |
| Other rules | Recent passport-size photo in colour; about 80% of the image is the face (without mask), ears visible; white background. A live photo is also captured during the application. | Clearly legible |
NTA publishes a new bulletin for each session cycle. Download the current one from jeemain.nta.nic.in and check these figures before you apply.
What it does and when to use it
The JEE (Main) form checks the file size of each upload against a range. Both a too-large file and a too-small one fail. A phone photo is typically measured in megabytes, while a scanned signature on white paper can be only a few kilobytes, so the two items usually go wrong in opposite directions.
This page solves both. It finds the highest JPEG quality that stays under the maximum, keeps the picture’s shape, and handles the 10 KB minimum with an optional padding step.
It is useful when:
- you are registering for JEE (Main) and need both images ready,
- you are on a phone or a shared computer and do not want to install an editor,
- the portal showed a file size error and you need a quick fix.
How it works
Everything runs in a background worker of your browser.
- Reading. The image is decoded upright, with transparency set to white.
- Keeping the shape. With no pixel size in the rules, there is no crop; the image keeps its proportions.
- Hitting the range. First a top-quality JPEG. If it exceeds 200 KB for the photo or 100 KB for the signature, the tool searches for the best quality under the limit (not below 30%). If even that fails, it scales the picture down to the largest size that fits and searches the quality again.
- The 10 KB floor. A result under 10 KB is padded if you ticked the option; otherwise the tool warns you and suggests a sharper original.
The limits use 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, so a file the tool accepts as under 200 KB also passes a portal counting 1,000 bytes per KB.
Worked examples
A 12-megapixel colour photo straight from the phone. It is many times larger than 200 KB. The tool reduces the quality first and, if necessary, the dimensions. To make sure the face fills about 80% of the result, crop to the head and shoulders with the Image Cropper before you start.
A small, sharp signature scan of 600 × 200 px. The top-quality JPEG may be only a few kilobytes, which is below 10 KB. Tick padding and run again; the file reaches the minimum and the picture is untouched.
A photo saved from a messaging app. Such photos are often already compressed and small. If it is under 200 KB and over 10 KB, the tool keeps the best quality and the table shows a tick. If the photo looks blurry, it is better to start from the original.
Getting the photo right
- Colour. The bulletin asks for a colour photo.
- Face size. About 80% of the image should be your face, without a mask, with your ears visible. A tight head-and-shoulders crop does this.
- Background. White and plain. A wall in daylight works; avoid shadows behind you.
- Recent. A live photo is taken during the application, so the uploaded one should match how you look now.
- Signature legibility. Sign clearly with a dark pen on white paper, keep it large, and crop away empty paper, for example with the Signature Extractor.
Why uploads fail, and the fix
- Wrong file type. The bulletin asks for JPG/JPEG. An iPhone photo is often HEIC, and screenshots are often PNG. This tool always saves JPEG; for HEIC files, convert them first with HEIC to JPG, because some browsers cannot open HEIC directly.
- Outside the range. Over 200 KB for the photo, over 100 KB for the signature, or under 10 KB for either. The table on this page shows a tick only when the file is inside its range.
- Files swapped. It is easy to put the signature in the photo slot. The tool names each file after the item (for example, -jee-main-photo.jpg and -jee-main-signature.jpg), which helps you pick the right one.
- Dark or blurred photo. A file can be the right size and still be hard to see. Take the photo again in daylight rather than brightening a dark one.
Limits and tips
- The tool checks size, not content. Whether the photo meets the face, colour and background rules is up to you.
- Very detailed images might still be too large at the lowest quality and smallest size the tool allows. Re-take them against a plain background.
- Padding adds bytes only. It does not improve the picture.
- Rules change. Figures were checked on 2026-10-02 against the 2026 bulletin. Always confirm them in the latest NTA notice.
- Other exams. The NEET Photo Resizer covers NEET (UG), which also asks for finger and thumb impressions, and the UPSC Photo & Signature Resizer covers civil services forms.
