How to use GATE Photo & Signature Resizer

  1. In What are you uploading?, choose Photo (530 × 690 px, 5–600 KB) or Signature (580 × 180 px, 3–300 KB).
  2. Choose your image. For the photo, use a recent colour picture on a plain white background.
  3. Under Fit to the size, use Crop to fill for the photo and set Keep which part when cropping to Top (keeps the head). For a signature that is already cropped close to the ink, choose Fit with white margins; for a signature photographed on a whole page, use Crop to fill with Centre.
  4. Tick If the file is below the minimum KB, pad it only if the result could fall under the minimum (5 KB for the photo, 3 KB for the signature).
  5. Press Resize for upload and read the Check against the rules table.
  6. Download the file, then repeat for the other item.

The official rules (checked 2026-10-21)

From the Photograph and Signature page of the GATE 2027 website (gate2027.iitm.ac.in), run by IIT Madras:

Rule Photo Signature
Format JPEG/JPG JPEG/JPG
File size 5 kB to 600 kB 3 kB to 300 kB
Pixel size 200 × 260 px minimum, 530 × 690 px maximum 250 × 80 px minimum, 580 × 180 px maximum
Shape Aspect ratio between 0.66 and 0.89; passport size, 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm Height to width 1 : R, R between 2.75 and 3.75
Size made by this tool 530 × 690 px 580 × 180 px
Content Colour; face covers 60–70% of the photo; plain white background with no other objects or people; looking straight at the camera Black or dark blue ink only; signature covers 70–80% of the image; signed by the applicant

The page also lists photos that are not accepted, including ones with sunglasses, caps, glare on spectacles, shadows, a mask, or other people or objects in the background. Signatures in all capitals, initials only, digital signatures and signatures on a dark background are not accepted either. It warns that a photo not meeting the criteria could lead to rejection of the application without a refund of the fee.

The page does not give a DPI value. Confirm everything on gate2027.iitm.ac.in and in GOAPS before you upload, because the organising institute can update its instructions.

Dates on the GATE 2027 website (checked 2026-10-21): GOAPS opened on 2 September 2026; regular registration closed on 5 October and late-fee registration on 12 October 2026, with a special late-fee window on 15–16 October 2026. Rectification of scrutiny defects runs from 14 to 31 October 2026. The examinations are on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. The site says all dates can change.

What it does and when to use it

GATE is stricter than most entrance-exam forms. Many forms only check a KB range, but GATE also sets a minimum and maximum pixel size and a shape for each image. A phone photo fails on all three counts: it is thousands of pixels wide, several megabytes, and usually not in the 0.66–0.89 shape. A signature photographed on a page is the wrong shape too, because the page is far taller than the 1 : 2.75 to 1 : 3.75 strip GATE wants.

This page fixes the pixel size, the shape and the KB range in one step, so you only need to check the content yourself: the face, the background and the ink.

Use it when you:

  • are fixing a photo or signature that was flagged during scrutiny,
  • are preparing files before you start a GOAPS application,
  • got a size or dimension error and need a quick, correct file.

How it works

Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

  1. Opening. The image is decoded upright, and any transparency becomes white.
  2. Making the shape. With Crop to fill, the tool cuts the largest piece of your image with the target shape. Top keeps more of the upper part of a portrait, where your head is. With Fit with white margins, the whole image is shrunk to fit and white fills the gap.
  3. Scaling. The result is scaled to exactly 530 × 690 px (photo) or 580 × 180 px (signature).
  4. Fitting the KB range. The JPEG is saved at top quality. If it is over the maximum, the tool lowers the quality, not below 30%, until it fits. If it is under the minimum, it pads the file when you tick the option, or warns you.

Each limit uses the stricter reading of KB: the maximum counts 1,000 bytes per KB (600 KB = 600,000 bytes) and the minimum 1,024 (5 KB = 5,120 bytes), so the file passes however the portal counts.

An uncompressed 530 × 690 px colour image is 1,097,100 bytes (365,700 pixels × 3 bytes), and JPEG compression makes it much smaller, so the 600 kB limit is rarely the problem. The thing to watch is the picture itself: face size, background and glare.

Worked examples

These crops come from the tool’s own geometry function.

A portrait phone photo, 3,024 × 4,032 px. To reach the 530 × 690 shape, the tool keeps the full 3,024 px width and a 3,937 px tall slice. With Top, the slice starts 19 px from the top, so almost nothing is lost. It is then scaled to 530 × 690 px. If your face is small in the original, crop closer first with the Image Cropper so that it covers 60–70% of the result.

A landscape phone photo, 4,032 × 3,024 px. The tool keeps a 2,323 × 3,024 px slice from the middle, starting 855 px from the left, and scales it to 530 × 690 px. Stand in the centre of the frame when you take it.

A signature photographed on a page, 4,032 × 3,024 px, with Crop to fill and Centre. The tool keeps a strip of the full width and 1,251 px high, starting 887 px from the top, and scales it to 580 × 180 px. If the signature is small on the page, it will cover far less than 70–80% of the image. Crop close to the ink first with the Signature Extractor.

A cleaned signature of 1,500 × 500 px, with Fit with white margins. The signature is scaled to 540 × 180 px and centred, with a 20 px white margin on each side. Nothing is cut off, and the ink still fills most of the image.

Getting the photo and signature right

Photo

  • Use a colour photo with a plain white background and no other people or objects.
  • Look straight at the camera; your forehead, eyes, nose and chin must be visible.
  • Remove caps and sunglasses. If your spectacles cause glare that you cannot avoid, take them off.
  • Make your face fill 60–70% of the photo. A head-and-shoulders crop does this.
  • Remember the same photo appears on your admit card and score card.

Signature

  • Sign in black or dark blue ink on plain white paper.
  • Sign normally: not in capital letters, not just initials.
  • Crop close to the signature so it covers 70–80% of the final image.

Limits and tips

  • The tool checks size, shape and file size, not content. It cannot tell whether your face covers 60–70% of the photo or whether the ink is the right colour.
  • Padding is not extra quality. It only adds bytes so a very small file meets the minimum.
  • Smaller sizes are allowed too. Anything from 200 × 260 px (photo) or 250 × 80 px (signature) up to the maximum is within the stated range. To make a different size, use Resize Image in KB and Pixels with the same KB limits.
  • HEIC photos. Convert iPhone HEIC files with HEIC to JPG first if your browser cannot open them.
  • Rules change. Figures were checked on 2026-10-21. Confirm them on the GATE 2027 website before you upload.
  • Other exams. See the JEE Main Photo Resizer and the UPSC Photo & Signature Resizer.

Frequently asked questions

What size should the GATE 2027 photo be?
The GATE 2027 website asks for a colour passport-size photo (3.5 cm wide by 4.5 cm high) in JPEG/JPG, between 200 × 260 px and 530 × 690 px, with an aspect ratio between 0.66 and 0.89, and a file size of 5 kB to 600 kB. The face should cover 60–70% of the photo, on a plain white background. Checked on 2026-10-21.
What size should the GATE 2027 signature be?
A JPEG/JPG between 250 × 80 px and 580 × 180 px, 3 kB to 300 kB, with a height-to-width ratio of 1 to R, where R is between 2.75 and 3.75. It must be in black or dark blue ink, and the signature should fill 70–80% of the image after cropping.
Why does the tool make 530 × 690 and 580 × 180 px?
They are the largest sizes the GATE page allows, so they keep the most detail. 530 ÷ 690 is 0.768, inside the 0.66–0.89 range for the photo, and 580 ÷ 180 is 3.22, inside the 2.75–3.75 range for the signature. Any size between the stated minimum and maximum is also within the rules.
Can I use a black-and-white photo for GATE?
The GATE 2027 page asks for a colour photograph. Use a colour photo.
Applications have closed. Is this still useful?
The regular and late-fee registration windows have ended, but the important dates page lists a window for rectifying scrutiny defects until 31 October 2026. If GOAPS tells you the photo or signature needs to be fixed, you can prepare the new file here. Follow what GOAPS and the GATE website say about what can be changed.
Will the same photo be on my admit card?
Yes. The GATE page says the admit card and score card will contain the photograph you submitted with the application.
Are my photo and signature uploaded to ToolsRift?
No. They are processed in your browser and saved straight to your device.
