How to use the random hobby generator
- Choose a Type: Any, Creative, Active, Mindful or Geeky.
- Set How many ideas you want, from 1 to 20.
- Leave No repeats ticked so the ideas are all different.
- Press Generate. Each idea shows the hobby and its type, such as “Pottery · creative”.
What it does and when to use it
When you have free evenings but no idea how to fill them, a random suggestion can break the “I don’t know what I like” loop. Use it for a new-year goal, a weekend challenge, a retirement project, a family activity list, or a club that tries a new pastime each month. Choosing a type first helps: Active if you sit all day, Mindful if you need to slow down, Creative if you want something to show for your time.
A good method is to draw five ideas, cross out anything that does not appeal, and try the first one left for two weeks. To choose from your shortlist with a spin, use the spinner wheel. To find people to join you, the random group assigner can split a club into activity groups. If you would rather play than learn, try the random trivia generator.
How it works
The hobbies are a fixed list stored in the page, each tagged with one type. The tool keeps the ones that match your Type. With No repeats, it shuffles them with a Fisher–Yates shuffle and takes the first ones; without it, each idea is drawn independently. The random numbers come from crypto.getRandomValues with rejection sampling, so every hobby in the pool has the same chance.
Worked examples
Something calm. Mindful with How many 3 gave Composting, Cloud spotting and Breathing exercises in one run. Each line ends with “ · mindful”.
A long geeky list. Geeky with How many 20 returns 20 of the 33 geeky hobbies, such as Cryptic crosswords, Mechanical keyboards, Model railways and Robotics, all different.
One idea for this weekend. Any with How many 1 draws from all 120.
Limits and tips
- Each hobby has only one type; yoga is listed as Active, although it can also be calming.
- The list does not include costs, locations or age limits.
- Everything runs in your browser.
