How to use the random emoji generator

  1. Choose a Category: Any, Faces, Animals, Food, Activities, Travel, Objects, Nature or Symbols.
  2. Enter How many emoji you want, from 1 to 100.
  3. Leave No repeats ticked so each emoji appears at most once, or untick it to allow doubles.
  4. Press Generate. The emoji appear in one line with the pool size underneath; copy them straight into a chat or document.

What it does and when to use it

Random emoji make quick creative prompts. Five emoji can start a short story in class, an icebreaker (“which of these is you today?”), or a round of emoji charades at a party. A random handful is also a quick way to test how a chat bubble or a font handles emoji.

For word prompts instead of pictures, try the random word generator. For acting games with ready-made prompts, the random charades generator has easy, medium and hard cards. To turn text into emoji letters, see the emoji letters tool.

How it works

Each category is a fixed list stored in the page. Any joins all eight lists into one pool of 379, listing the volcano only once.

With No repeats ticked, the tool shuffles the pool with a Fisher–Yates shuffle and keeps the first emoji, like drawing cards from a deck. Without it, each emoji is picked independently, so the same one can come up twice. In both cases the random numbers come from crypto.getRandomValues, with rejection sampling so every emoji in the pool has the same chance.

Worked examples

Three food emoji. Category Food, How many 3. One run gave 🥥 🎂 🍒, and the stats show Pool size: 50.

A mixed handful. Category Any, How many 5. One run gave ✖️ 🏰 ✉️ 🐯 🏖️ from a pool of 379, mixing symbols, travel, objects and animals.

The whole Nature set. Category Nature, How many 100, No repeats ticked. Only 40 nature emoji exist, so you get each of them once, shuffled, from 🌸 and 🌍 to ☄️.

Limits and tips

  • The volcano 🌋 is in both Travel and Nature, but the Any pool lists it once, so No repeats never shows it twice.
  • Some emoji are made of two characters (for example ☀️ with a style marker). Copy whole emoji, not parts.
  • Everything runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Which emoji are included?
A fixed set of 379 different common emoji in eight categories. Faces, Animals, Food, Activities, Travel and Objects have 50 each; Nature and Symbols have 40 each, and the volcano is in both Travel and Nature. Flags, people with skin tones and newer emoji are not in the set.
Why do some emoji show as empty boxes?
Emoji are drawn by your device's fonts. An older phone or computer may not know some newer characters, such as the blueberry or the rock, and shows a box instead. Copied emoji will look different again on the receiver's device.
What happens if I ask for more emoji than a category has?
With No repeats ticked you simply get the whole category in a random order. Nature has 40 emoji, so asking for 100 gives all 40 once each.
Can I use these in a game?
Yes. Common uses are emoji charades, "tell a story using these five emoji" prompts, and guess-the-film rounds. Nothing about the draw is stored, so each press is a fresh set.
