How to use the PDF rotate page range tool

  1. Drop a PDF onto the box or press Choose a file. If you are not sure which pages are sideways, check in the PDF viewer first.
  2. In Pages to rotate, type the pages, for example 3, 1-3, 5 or even. The default is 1.
  3. Under Rotate, choose 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° anticlockwise.
  4. Press Rotate pages and download the file, named with -rotated added.

Mixed documents are the usual reason to rotate only some pages. A report has a wide table printed in landscape on pages 7 and 8. A scanned contract has one page that went through the feeder upside down. A merged application pack contains a phone photo of a certificate that came out sideways. Rotating the whole file would fix those pages and break the rest; this tool turns only what you list.

Duplex scanning is another case. Some scanners turn every back page upside down, so even with 180° fixes the whole file in one go.

How it works

Every PDF page has a rotation value of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees that tells readers how to display it. pdf-lib (@cantoo/pdf-lib) opens your file in the browser, adds your angle to that value for each listed page, and saves. Anticlockwise 90° is stored as 270°. Because only this number changes, nothing on the page is redrawn or compressed again. Nothing is uploaded, and no extra data is downloaded.

The page list understands single pages, ranges (2-4), open ranges (8- to the end), odd, even and last, separated by commas.

Worked examples

These come from a 12-page A4 report.

Landscape tables. Pages to rotate 1-3, 5, 90° clockwise. The summary reads 4 pages rotated 90° (lossless). Pages 4 and 6 to 12 are unchanged.

Upside-down backs from a duplex scan. Pages to rotate even, 180°. The summary reads 6 pages rotated 180° (lossless); pages 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 are now the right way up.

One sideways photo. Pages to rotate last, 90° anticlockwise turns only page 12, and the summary says 1 page rotated 90° anticlockwise (lossless).

Limits and tips

  • An empty Pages field or a page outside the file gives a message instead of a result.
  • Rotation turns the whole page. To straighten a slightly tilted scan, rescan it; this tool only turns in 90° steps.
  • Password-protected files must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF.

Which way is "90° clockwise"?
The top of the page moves to the right, like turning a sheet on your desk to the right. A page whose text runs bottom to top needs 90° clockwise; text running top to bottom needs 90° anticlockwise.
