How to use the PDF page deleter
- Drop a PDF onto the box or press Choose a file. Every page appears as a numbered thumbnail.
- Click (or tap) each page you want to remove. A marked page fades and shows a red ✕. With a keyboard, move to a page with Tab and press Space or Enter.
- To mark many at once, press Even pages or Odd pages. Press Clear to unmark everything.
- Read the line above the grid, for example 3 of 12 pages will be deleted: 2, 5-6.
- Press Delete pages and download the result, named with
-editedadded (report.pdfbecomesreport-edited.pdf).
What it does and when to use it
Removing a page is one of the most common PDF jobs. Typical reasons:
- Blank pages. Word exports and scanners often leave an empty page at the end or between sections.
- Duplex scans. Scanning single-sided paper in double-sided mode adds a blank back after every page. Press Odd pages to see which pages hold content, or Even pages to mark all the backs at once.
- Private pages. Remove the page with your account number or medical details before you share a document.
- Unneeded material. Drop the terms and conditions, adverts or appendix before you print or upload.
Because you see each page, you can pick blank pages and stray scans by eye rather than by number. If it is easier to name the few pages you want to keep, use the PDF page extractor instead. To remove only part of a page, the PDF redaction tool blacks out an area and removes what is under it.
How it works
Two libraries do the work on your device:
- pdf.js (pdfjs-dist) draws the thumbnails, in its own background worker. A thumbnail is drawn when it scrolls into view. If the PDF uses standard fonts or character maps it does not contain, pdf.js may download that data from cdn.jsdelivr.net; the document itself is never sent.
- pdf-lib (@cantoo/pdf-lib) builds the new file. The pages you marked are sent to a background worker as a list such as
2, 5, 6. The worker works out which pages remain, rewrites the PDF’s page list with only those, and saves.
The important step is the clean-up. Simply unlinking a page from the page list would leave its content inside the file, where anyone with a PDF editor could find it. This tool walks through everything the document still uses and deletes every other object, so the deleted pages’ text and images are not written to the new file. Document properties such as the title and author stay.
Worked examples
These come from running the tool on a 12-page A4 report.
Three unwanted pages. Mark pages 2, 5 and 6. The note reads 3 of 12 pages will be deleted: 2, 5-6. After saving, the summary says Deleted 3 pages (2, 5-6) → 9 pages left, and report-edited.pdf has 9 pages.
Blank backs from a duplex scan. A 12-page scan has content on pages 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 only. Press Even pages, check that the faded pages are the blank ones, and save. The summary reads Deleted 6 pages (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) → 6 pages left.
Marking everything. If all 12 thumbnails are marked, the tool shows You cannot delete every page — keep at least one. and does not save.
Limits and tips
- Thumbnails take a moment on long or image-heavy files, since each one is drawn on your device as you scroll.
- Bookmarks that pointed to a deleted page may no longer lead anywhere. Links and bookmarks to the remaining pages still work.
- Page numbers printed on the pages do not change. If the document shows “Page 4 of 12” in the footer, it still says so. Add fresh numbers afterwards with PDF page numbering.
- Very large files are read fully into memory and can fail on phones.
- To reorder as well, save here first, then open the result in the PDF page reorder tool.
- Check before you share. Open the saved file in the PDF viewer to confirm the right pages went.
