How to use PDF Password Remover

1. Choose the protected PDF.
2. Type the password you normally use to open it in Password. If the file opens without a password and you only want to remove print or copy restrictions, leave the field empty.
3. Press Unlock PDF.
4. If you see “That password is not correct”, check capital letters, spaces and the date format the sender used, then try again.
5. Download the copy ending in -unlocked.pdf. It opens without a password.

What it does and when to use it

Many organisations protect the PDFs they send with a password, often something predictable such as part of your name and date of birth. Bank and credit card statements, payslips, insurance policies, tax documents and utility bills commonly arrive this way. That is sensible for sending, but tiresome when you need to open the same file again and again, merge it with other documents, upload it to a portal that rejects encrypted files, or print it from a device that cannot handle the password prompt.

This tool removes that password from your copy once you have supplied it. The result is an ordinary PDF that looks identical to the original. It is meant for your own documents and files you have been given the password for.

How it works

The PDF is opened inside your browser with pdf-lib using the password you typed. If it decrypts, the tool writes the document out again without encryption. Because the original pages are kept rather than re-drawn, text stays selectable and searchable, links still work, and the file size stays close to the original.

Some PDFs use encryption variants that pdf-lib cannot read. For those, the tool automatically tries a second engine, qpdf compiled to WebAssembly, which also runs on your device. If neither can open the file with the password given, you get a clear message, and nothing is guessed.

If the PDF was not encrypted at all, the tool tells you so and saves a clean copy.

Worked examples

A monthly bank statement. The bank’s email says the password is the first four letters of your name in capitals plus your date of birth as DDMM. Type it exactly, press Unlock PDF, and save the -unlocked copy. You can now merge twelve statements into one file with the PDF Merger for a loan application.

A form that opens freely but blocks printing. Leave the password empty. The tool removes the permission flags and saves a copy that prints normally.

The wrong password. The tool replies that the password is not correct for this PDF and reminds you that it never guesses. Common causes are a capital letter, a missing leading zero in a date, or a space.

Limits and tips

• An unknown open password cannot be removed. That is how PDF encryption is meant to work.
• After unlocking, keep the file somewhere safe; it is no longer protected. You can add your own password later with Protect PDF.
• Personal details in the document’s properties, such as author names, can be stripped with the PDF Metadata Remover before sharing.
