How to use the random movie genre generator
- Set Combos to the number of film briefs you want, from 1 to 20.
- Leave Include a decade ticked to add an era such as the 1990s, or untick it for mood and genre only.
- Press Generate. Each line reads like “An eerie western film from the 1950s”.
- Copy the list or press Generate again.
What it does and when to use it
Choosing a film can take longer than watching one. A random brief narrows the search to a small, specific shelf: “a heart-warming sports film from the 1990s” is far easier to fill than “something good”. Use it for a solo film night, a group that cannot agree, a monthly film club theme, or a writing exercise where you plan a film that matches the brief.
For a group, draw five combos and vote, or put the options on the spinner wheel. The random food generator can pick what to eat while you watch. For an acting game after the film, try the random charades generator.
How it works
The tool has three fixed lists: 18 moods (such as cosy, tense, bittersweet and mind-bending), 36 genres (from action and animation to courtroom drama and road movie) and 11 decades. For each combo it picks one item from each list with crypto.getRandomValues, using rejection sampling so every item in a list is equally likely. It then writes “A” or “An” to match the mood and puts the genre in lower case.
Because each list is drawn on its own, every mood is equally likely with every genre. Nothing checks whether a combination is common.
Worked examples
Three combos with decades. One run gave:
- An eerie romantic comedy film from the 1950s
- An edge-of-your-seat western film from the 1940s
- An inspiring road movie film from the 1940s
Each line contains “ film from the “ followed by a decade. Repeated decades, as here, are normal.
Two combos without decades. Include a decade unticked gave “A thought-provoking science fiction film” and “A tense thriller film”.
Limits and tips
- Some genres already contain the word, so you may see “road movie film” or “film noir film”. Read them as the genre.
- Moods are general; “eerie” or “tense” does not mean a film is unsuitable for children, so check age ratings yourself.
- Everything runs in your browser.
