How to use the random letter generator
- Choose the Case: Uppercase, Lowercase or Mixed.
- Under Letters, pick Any (A–Z), Vowels or Consonants.
- Set How many letters you want, from 1 to 500.
- Tick No repeats if each letter may appear only once.
- Press Generate. The letters appear in one line, separated by spaces, ready to copy.
What it does and when to use it
Plenty of word games start with “think of something beginning with…”. Use one letter for a round of Scattergories-style categories, Stop or Name Place Animal Thing. Use five or ten for a spelling warm-up, a handwriting sheet, or a vowel-and-consonant round like the one in TV letters games. Teachers can also call out letters for phonics or alphabet bingo.
If you need letters arranged into pronounceable chunks such as BAKUL, the random letter sequence tool fills C and V patterns. For whole words, try the random word generator.
How it works
The tool builds a pool from your Letters choice: 26 letters for Any, 5 for Vowels, 20 for Consonants. Each draw picks one position in the pool with a whole number from crypto.getRandomValues. Raw values that would make some letters slightly more likely are thrown away and drawn again, so every letter in the pool has exactly the same chance.
With No repeats ticked, the pool is shuffled and the first letters are taken, like dealing tiles from a bag. You therefore cannot ask for more letters than the pool holds.
Worked examples
Asking for too many vowels. Vowels, How many 6, No repeats ticked: there are only five vowels, so the tool replies “Only 5 different letters are available with this filter.” With How many set to 5 you get all five vowels, for example I U O E A, in a new order each time.
All the consonants. Consonants with No repeats and 22 letters gives “Only 21 different letters are available with this filter.” The 21 include Y.
A game round. Any, Uppercase, How many 1: one letter such as M. Press Generate for each new round.
Limits and tips
- Only the 26 letters of the English alphabet are included; there are no accented letters.
- Without No repeats, the same letter can appear twice in a row. That is normal for independent draws.
- For a vowel and consonant mix like a TV letters round, run Vowels and Consonants separately and combine them.
- For a custom set of letters, such as A to T only, type them one per line into the random picker.
- Letters are generated on your device; nothing is uploaded.
