How to use space between letters

1. Type or paste into Your text.
2. Choose what to Insert: A space, Two spaces, Hyphen -, Dot ., Middle dot · or Custom….
3. For Custom, type your separator in Custom separator. It can be several characters, such as “ | “ or “ ✦ “.
4. Copy the spaced text from the result.

What it does and when to use it

Spaced lettering is a design trick. Wide letter spacing makes a short word look calm, stylish or important, and it is common in logos, posters, menu headings and video titles. Many places where you type text, such as social profiles, chat apps and plain-text emails, have no letter-spacing setting. Inserting real spaces is the only way to get the look there.

Other uses:

• Readable codes. Separate the characters of a voucher, a reference number or a spelled-out word, so it can be read aloud without mistakes.
• Teaching. Show a word letter by letter for spelling practice, using hyphens or dots.
• Decorative separators. A middle dot or a custom symbol gives titles like V·I·P.

How it works

The text is split into lines. Each line is then broken into user-perceived characters, also called grapheme clusters. That means an emoji built from several code points, such as 👍🏽, or a letter with a combining accent, is treated as one character. The separator is placed between neighbouring characters, but not before the first or after the last one. The lines are then joined again with their original line breaks. It all runs in your browser.

Worked examples

These outputs come from the tool’s own function.

A heading. “SPACED OUT” with A space gives S P A C E D O U T.

Hyphens and existing spaces. “hi you” with Hyphen - gives h-i- -y-o-u. The space between the words now sits between two hyphens.

A custom separator. “NEWS” with Custom separator “ | “ gives N | E | W | S.

Middle dots. “VIP” with Middle dot · gives V·I·P.

Limits and tips

• Spaced text takes much more room. A 20-character title becomes 39 characters with single spaces, which matters for fields with length limits. Check with the character counter.
• A custom separator is inserted exactly as typed, including any spaces around it.
