How to use the random username generator

  1. Choose a Style: BraveOtter (joined, capitalised), brave_otter (lower case with underscores), brave.otter (lower case with a dot), Brav3Ott3r (lowercase o→0, e→3) (gamer swaps), or BraOtte (short).
  2. Leave Add a number ticked to add a number from 1 to 999, or untick it for words only.
  3. Set How many usernames you want, from 1 to 100.
  4. Press Generate. Copy one name or use Copy all.

What it does and when to use it

A good username is easy to say, easy to remember and does not give away who you are. Use this to pick a gamer tag, a forum or social media handle, a Wi-Fi network name, a name for a test account, or a team name for an online quiz. Generating ten at once and choosing the one you like is quicker than inventing one under pressure on a sign-up screen.

For a real-sounding full name for a story, use the random name generator. For a strong password to go with the new account, use the strong password generator. If you prefer pronounceable made-up words, the random letter sequence builds them from patterns such as CVCVC.

How it works

For each username the tool picks one adjective from 50 (Atomic, Brave, Cosmic, Lucky…) and one noun from 49 (Badger, Comet, Otter, Puffin…), plus a number from 1 to 999 when that option is on. Each pick uses crypto.getRandomValues with rejection sampling, so every word and number is equally likely. The style then decides how the parts are joined:

Style Example
BraveOtter FrostyNinja830
brave_otter shadow_koala_850
brave.otter golden.badger516
Brav3Ott3r (lowercase o→0, e→3) S0nicLlama859
BraOtte RocSqui (first 3 + first 4 letters)

Worked examples

Lower case with underscores. Style brave_otter, 3 names: one run gave shadow_koala_850, mellow_pixel_810 and crispy_gecko_573. Each list ends with “Check availability on the site you want to use — these are generated on your device and not looked up anywhere.”

Gamer style. One run gave S0nicLlama859, Brav3Mang0114 and Sl33pyPanda837.

Short, no number. Style BraOtte with Add a number unticked gave RocSqui, EleBeac and RocPand.

Limits and tips

  • The word list is small, so other people may already use popular pairs; a number helps.
  • Short style can produce odd fragments; pick the ones you can say aloud.
  • Everything runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is the username available?
The tool cannot tell you. It makes names on your device and does not check any website or game. Try your favourite in the sign-up form; if it is taken, add or change the number.
How many different usernames are possible?
There are 50 adjectives and 49 nouns, so 2,450 word pairs per style. With Add a number, each pair gets a number from 1 to 999, giving about 2.4 million combinations per style.
What exactly does the gamer style change?
It joins the words with no separator and swaps every lower-case o for 0 and every lower-case e for 3, so SleepyPanda becomes Sl33pyPanda and BraveMango becomes Brav3Mang0. Capital letters and other vowels are left alone.
Is it safe for children?
The word lists are family-friendly, using words such as Sunny, Cosmic, Penguin and Robot. Remind children not to put their real name, age or school in a username.
