How to use the PDF to PNG converter
- Drop a PDF onto the box or press Choose a file.
- In Pages, leave
allor type the pages you want, for example1or3-5. - Choose a Resolution: 72 DPI (screen, small), 150 DPI (good), 200 DPI (sharp) or 300 DPI (print).
- Tick Transparent background where the page has none if you need see-through areas.
- Press Convert to PNG. Download each image, or all of them together as a .zip file.
What it does and when to use it
PNG is the right image format when a page is mostly text, lines, charts or a logo. It is lossless, so letters keep crisp edges instead of the soft halo that JPG compression adds. Common uses:
- Putting one slide or chart from a PDF report into a presentation, a wiki or a blog post.
- Turning a vector logo or a diagram from a PDF into an image for a website, with a transparent background.
- Uploading a one-page certificate to a site that only accepts images.
- Sharing a single page in a chat app that does not preview PDFs.
To go the other way, the PNG to PDF converter turns images back into a PDF.
How it works
The pages are drawn in a background worker in your browser with pdf.js (the pdfjs-dist package), on an off-screen canvas. The canvas size comes from the page size and your DPI: a page of W × H points is drawn at W × DPI ÷ 72 by H × DPI ÷ 72 pixels, because a PDF point is 1/72 of an inch. Each canvas is then saved as PNG by the browser.
Your file is not uploaded. If the PDF uses standard fonts or character maps it does not contain, pdf.js may download that data from cdn.jsdelivr.net. Rendering in a worker skips a few rare graphic effects, so an unusual page may look slightly different from a desktop reader.
Worked examples
A three-page A4 report at 150 DPI. Pages all gives report-page-1.png, report-page-2.png and report-page-3.png, with the summary 3 pages → PNG at 150 DPI (1240 × 1754 px).
One page for print. Pages 1 at 300 DPI gives a single 2480 × 3508 px image of page 1. A US Letter page at the same setting is 2550 × 3300 px.
A logo on a transparent background. A one-page PDF containing only a logo, at 200 DPI with the transparent option ticked, gives a 1654 × 2339 px PNG (A4) where everything around the logo is see-through. Crop it in an image editor to the logo’s edges.
Limits and tips
- PNG files of photo-heavy pages can be large, often several megabytes at 300 DPI. Use JPG for those.
- Scanned PDFs are already images, so a resolution higher than the scan (often 200–300 DPI) adds pixels but no detail.
- The size in the summary is for the first page; pages of other sizes get their own dimensions.
- Password-protected files must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF.
