How to use the PNG to PDF converter

1. Drop your images onto the box, press Choose files, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac). PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP files are accepted.
2. Put the files in page order: drag them, or use the ↑ and ↓ buttons. Press ✕ to remove one.
3. Choose a Page size: Same as each image, A4, US Letter, US Legal, A3 or A5.
4. Choose an Orientation: Auto turns each page to match its image, or force Portrait or Landscape.
5. Set the Margin in millimetres (0 to 50; the default is 10).
6. Press Create PDF and download the file.

What it does and when to use it

PNG is the usual format for screenshots, scanned forms saved from some apps, charts and logos. Many places still want a PDF instead:

• Proof and receipts. A payment confirmation or booking screen captured on your phone, sent to an employer or a landlord as one PDF.
• Bug reports and how-to guides. Several screenshots in step order, combined into one document that is easy to attach and print.
• Applications and portals. A form that asks for “one PDF” when you have a certificate and an ID card as separate PNG files.
• Handouts. Diagrams or slides exported as PNG, put on A4 pages with a margin so they print without being cut off.

For photos from a camera, which are usually JPG, the JPG to PDF converter works the same way. To turn PDF pages back into images, use PDF to PNG.

How it works

Everything runs in your browser with pdf-lib (the @cantoo/pdf-lib package). Nothing is uploaded and nothing extra is downloaded.

1. Each file is read on your device. PNG and JPEG files are recognised from their first bytes, not the file name.
2. Any WebP, GIF or BMP file is decoded by the browser, drawn onto a white canvas and saved as a JPEG at 92% quality, because a PDF can only hold JPEG or PNG-style images directly.
3. For each image the tool creates one page. With a paper size, the image is scaled to fit inside the margins without stretching, and centred. With Same as each image, the page is made the image’s size at 96 pixels per inch (1 pixel = 0.75 points), plus the margin on each side.
4. JPEG photos with a rotation tag from the camera (EXIF orientation) are turned the right way up. PNG files have no such tag and are placed as they are.
5. The PDF is saved, named after your first file. With several files, -and-more is added, so screenshot-1.png becomes screenshot-1-and-more.pdf.

How big will the image be on the page?

The usable area is the paper size minus twice the margin. On A4 with the default 10 mm margin that is 190 × 277 mm in portrait or 277 × 190 mm in landscape. The image is made as large as possible inside that area while keeping its shape.

Worked examples

These were produced by the tool’s own function.

Two phone screenshots and one desktop screenshot. Files: two 1080 × 2400 px phone screenshots and one 1920 × 1080 px screenshot, A4, orientation Auto, margin 10 mm. The result is a 3-page PDF and the summary reads 3 images → 3-page PDF, followed by the total size of the images and the size of the PDF. The phone screenshots sit on portrait pages, each 124.6 × 277 mm (tall images are limited by the page height). The desktop screenshot gets a landscape page, where it is 277 × 155.8 mm (limited by the width).

A diagram on a page that fits it. One 800 × 600 px PNG with Same as each image and margin 0 gives a single page of 600 × 450 points (about 212 × 159 mm), exactly the image’s shape with no white border. The summary reads 1 image → 1-page PDF.

A WebP image in the mix. Add a WebP file with your PNGs and the result also says 1 image(s) in other formats were converted to JPEG first.

Limits and tips

• The pages are pictures. Text in screenshots is not selectable or searchable until you run OCR PDF.
• Margins and white edges. For a borderless look on paper sizes, set Margin to 0; the image still keeps its shape, so white bands remain where the shapes differ. Use Same as each image to avoid them completely.
• Very large images (tens of megapixels each) use a lot of memory. On a phone, convert them in smaller groups and merge the PDFs afterwards.
• Transparent WebP or GIF files lose their transparency, because they are converted to JPEG on a white background.
• Animated GIFs become a single still image.
