- Set How many, change Variation for new combinations, and copy the ones you like.
What it does and when to use it
Signing up for a new platform usually starts with a username, and your first choice is often taken. This tool gives you a list of variations at once: your full name with a separator, initials, your name with a short word, or playful gaming-style handles. Use it for social media, gaming accounts, forums, email addresses or a new project’s handle.
For the profile text that goes with it, try the Twitter bio generator. If you need a name for a business rather than a person, use the business name generator. For a matching profile picture, the identicon avatar generator can make one from your new username.
How it works
The name is lower-cased, accents are removed, and it is split into parts at anything that is not a letter or a digit. The first part is your first name; the last part (if there is more than one) is your last name. Each style has a few building rules:
| Style | Examples of the rules |
|---|---|
| Simple | first + last, first + last initial, “the” + first, “its” + first, first + an animal or nature word |
| Professional | first + last, first initial + last, first + hq, dev, design, official… |
| Gaming | adjective + first, first + x, pro, gg, ace…, a version with o→0 and e→3 |
| Creative | first + makes, writes, studio…, “hello” + first |
Rules are applied in turn, with words picked by a seeded random number generator. With Add numbers ticked, about six in ten names get a number of up to two or four digits. Each name is cut to the maximum length, and repeats and names shorter than 3 characters are dropped. Nothing leaves your browser.
Worked examples
Simple, with underscores. “Maya Chen”, Simple, no numbers. The list starts maya_chen, mayac, m_chen, the_maya, followed by names such as maya_otter.
Professional, no separator. The list includes mayachen, mchen, mayadesign and mayaofficial.
Gaming, accented name. “José Álvarez”, Gaming, Variation 2, max length 12. Accents disappear and the list includes jose_shadow, zero_jose and the swapped-letter j0s3_storm.
Limits and tips
- Some combinations may already belong to a well-known person or brand. Avoid handles that could be mistaken for someone else.
- Cutting to the max length can chop a word in half. Raise the limit if names look broken.
- Keep the same handle across platforms where you can; it makes you easier to find.
