Frequently asked questions

What is a tone generator used for?

Tuning instruments against a reference pitch, testing speakers and room response, checking equipment for buzz at specific frequencies, calibrating levels, and creating raw source material for synthesis.

Which waveform should I choose?

Sine is a single pure frequency and is best for tuning and testing. Square, sawtooth and triangle add harmonics, which makes them louder-sounding and more useful for synthesis or for hearing how a system handles complex content.

Is playback volume safe?

The output gain is capped well below full scale and the tone is ramped in and out to avoid clicks. High frequencies at high volume are still fatiguing, so start quiet and raise your system volume gradually.
