Record video from your webcam in the browser

Press Start recording, allow camera access when your browser asks, and the page records your webcam (and microphone, if you want) until you press Stop; the clip is then ready to play and download, without ever being uploaded.

How to use the webcam recorder

  1. Choose a Resolution: 480p, 720p (default) or 1080p (if the camera supports it).
  2. Leave Record the microphone ticked for sound, or untick it for a silent clip. Mirror the preview is on by default.
  3. Press Start recording. Your browser shows a permission prompt asking to use the camera (and the microphone). Choose Allow.
  4. The live preview, a timer and a sound-level meter appear. Use Pause and Resume as needed, then press Stop.
  5. Play the clip on the page and press Download. The file is named with the date and time, for example webcam-2026-10-07-153005.webm.

What it does and when to use it

Sometimes you need a short video of yourself without installing an app or signing in anywhere: a video answer for a job application, a quick message to a colleague, a lesson or demonstration for students, a product unboxing, or a test of how your camera and lighting look before a meeting. The recorder works in a normal browser tab on a laptop or a phone.

If you need your screen instead of your face, use the screen recorder. For sound only, the voice recorder is simpler. After recording, cut the start and end with the video trimmer or make the file smaller with the video compressor.

How it works

The page asks the browser for the camera at your chosen height in a 16:9 shape, plus the microphone with echo cancellation and noise suppression switched on. The browser’s built-in MediaRecorder encodes the stream as it comes in and adds a piece of the file every second. When you press Stop, the pieces are joined into one file. Nothing is downloaded from elsewhere and nothing leaves your device. You can change permissions for the site at any time in the browser’s settings.

Worked examples

  • A 42-second video message at 720p with sound in Chrome produces a WebM file, and the summary shows its length (0:42), type (video/webm) and size.
  • The same message in a browser that cannot record WebM, such as some versions of Safari, produces an MP4 instead.
  • A silent 1080p clip for a product shot: untick Record the microphone. The level meter is hidden and the file has no audio track.

Limits and tips

  • The page must be open on https, and the tab should stay in front; some phones pause the camera when you switch apps.
  • Long recordings use memory, because the whole clip is kept in the tab until you download it. Save long sessions in parts.
  • Some players cannot skip around in browser-made WebM files. Running the file through the video converter to MP4 usually fixes this.
  • Settings are hidden while recording. Stop first to change the resolution or microphone.

Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded or saved online?
No. The browser's MediaRecorder builds the file in this tab's memory. It is not sent to any server, and it disappears if you close or reload the tab before you download it.
What file format do I get?
The first format your browser can record, in this order of preference. WebM with VP9 or VP8 video and Opus audio (Chrome, Edge, Firefox), otherwise MP4 with H.264 and AAC (often the case in Safari). Use the video converter if you need another format.
Why is my recording mirrored, or not mirrored?
Mirror the preview only flips what you see while recording, like a mirror. The saved file is always the right way round, so text you hold up will read correctly in the recording.
Why do I get a 720p video when I chose 1080p?
The resolution is a request, not a demand. If the camera cannot deliver 1080p, the browser uses the closest size it supports. Many laptop cameras top out at 720p.
The page says access to the camera was blocked. What now?
Click the camera or lock icon in the address bar, allow the camera and microphone for this site, and press Start recording again. If another app such as a video call is using the camera, close it first.
