Character reversal turns “hello world” into “dlrow olleh”. Word reversal keeps each word intact and reverses their order, giving “world hello” — which is what you usually want for prose. Line reversal flips the order of lines while leaving each one alone, useful for turning a chronological log or a list into reverse order. They are genuinely different operations and people often ask for one while meaning another.

Why reversing a string is a classic trick question

Reversing an array of characters is trivial until Unicode is involved. An emoji is stored as a surrogate pair, and reversing the code units splits it into two invalid halves. A composed character — e followed by a combining acute — reverses into the accent attached to the wrong letter. A flag emoji is two regional indicator symbols; reversed, it becomes a different country’s flag. Fully correct reversal means working in grapheme clusters, which is why the interview question is more interesting than it first appears.
