How to use Remove Line Numbers

1. Paste your text into Numbered text. The sample shows five common styles.
2. Decide on Only when the number is followed by . ) : | or a tab. Leave it off for code listings where a number and a space start each line; turn it on for prose where lines may begin with a year or a quantity.
3. Copy the cleaned text.

What it does and when to use it

Line numbers help on the page but get in the way when you reuse the text. You meet them when you:

• copy code from a PDF, e-book, tutorial site or terminal that shows line numbers;
• paste a numbered list into a tool that adds its own numbering;
• reuse subtitles, transcripts or legal clauses that carry reference numbers;
• take a list you numbered with Add Line Numbers and want the plain version back.

The strict option is there because numbers at the start of a line are not always line numbers. A shopping list with “3 apples” or notes starting “2026 was…” would lose real content in the default mode. Strict mode only removes a number that is clearly a label, because a mark such as a dot, bracket, colon, bar or tab follows it.

For lists numbered with letters or Roman numerals, Numbered List to Text understands those markers. To remove every digit anywhere in the text, use Remove Numbers. Clean leftover spaces with Trim Lines.

How it works

Each line is checked from its start. The tool skips any leading spaces, then looks for one of these patterns: a number in square or round brackets; an optional # and a number followed by one or more of . ) : | ] -, with or without spaces before them, or by a tab; or (default mode only) a number followed by a space. If a pattern matches, it is deleted together with one space after it. Lines that do not start with a number are left exactly as they were. The work happens in your browser.

Worked examples

Mixed styles. “1. Buy milk”, “2) Call Sam”, “[3] Pay rent”, “(4) Book flight” and “#5: Post card” all lose their numbers, leaving five plain tasks.

Default mode on prose. “2026 was a busy year”, “3 apples” and “1. intro” become was a busy year, apples and intro. The year and the quantity were taken for line numbers.

Strict mode. The same three lines with strict mode on give 2026 was a busy year, 3 apples and intro. Only “1.” had a marker, so only it was removed.

Limits and tips

• Ranges and decimals at a line start can be cut. In default mode “10-15 people” becomes “15 people” (strict mode keeps it), and in both modes “1.5 litres” becomes “5 litres”. Check lines like these after cleaning.
• The “1 | “ style from Add Line Numbers, with a space before the bar, is removed whole in both modes.
