How to use PDF to Word

  1. Choose a PDF that has real text (one made on a computer, or a scan you have already run through OCR).
  2. Leave Pages as all, or enter a range such as 2-5 to convert only part of it.
  3. Keep Start each PDF page on a new Word page ticked to mirror the PDF’s pages, or untick it for one continuous document.
  4. Press Convert to Word.
  5. Download the .docx file and open it in Word or another word processor.

What it does and when to use it

PDFs are designed for reading and printing, not editing. When you need to update an old report, reuse paragraphs from a policy document, correct a CV you only have as a PDF, or translate a document, getting the text into Word saves you retyping it.

This converter focuses on what you actually edit: the words and the shape of the document. Headings, normal paragraphs, bullet and numbered lists and simple tables come through as real Word elements, so you can restyle them with Word’s own tools. Things that are about appearance rather than content, such as exact fonts, multi-column layouts, decorative images and precise positions, are left behind. A short note in the result says this every time, so there are no surprises.

How it works

The conversion runs in a background worker in your browser. pdf.js reads the text from each page together with its size and position. The tool then groups text into lines and lines into blocks:

  • lines in a clearly larger font become headings;
  • lines starting with bullets or numbers become list items;
  • text arranged in aligned columns across several rows becomes a table;
  • everything else is joined into paragraphs, and words split by a hyphen at the end of a line are joined back together.

Finally the docx library writes those blocks into a Word file. The result panel reports how many pages were read and how many blocks, headings and tables were created.

Worked examples

A 10-page report saved from Word years ago. This is the ideal case. Headings come back as headings, numbered steps as a list, and a simple two-column table as a Word table. You may need to reapply your preferred fonts and spacing.

A two-column newsletter. The text is all there, but columns are not reproduced, so the result reads as one column. Check the order of paragraphs where columns met.

A scanned contract. The tool finds no text and tells you to use OCR. Run OCR PDF in the right language, then convert the searchable PDF. Recognition errors carry over, so proofread names and numbers.

Just pages 3 to 5 of a long manual. Enter 3-5 in Pages to convert only those pages, which is quicker and keeps the Word file focused.

Limits and tips

  • Complex tables with merged cells, or tables drawn as images, may come through as plain paragraphs.
  • Headers, footers and page numbers are treated as ordinary text, so you may want to delete them from each page in Word.
  • If you only need the plain words, PDF to Text is simpler and keeps no formatting at all. For tables, the PDF Table Extractor exports CSV for a spreadsheet.
  • After editing, turn the document back into a PDF with Word to PDF, or use Word’s own Save as PDF for an exact copy of your Word layout.
  • A protected PDF needs its password removed first with PDF Unlock.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?
No. It keeps the words and their structure, such as headings, paragraphs, lists and simple tables, but not the exact fonts, positions, columns or images. Expect to tidy the formatting in Word.
Why does it say no text layer was found?
The PDF is a scan, so its pages are pictures with no real text. Run OCR PDF first to recognise the words, then convert the searchable result.
Are images from the PDF included?
No. Only text and tables are rebuilt. If you need the pictures, save the pages as images with PDF to JPG and insert the ones you want.
Can I open the result in Google Docs or LibreOffice?
Yes. The output is a standard .docx file, which Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer and Apple Pages can open.
Is it safe for confidential documents?
Yes. Conversion happens in your browser and the file is not uploaded or stored anywhere.
How are headings detected?
From font size. Lines set noticeably larger than the body text become Word headings, which also makes them appear in Word's navigation pane.
