How to use Wire Gauge Converter

Enter an AWG number, a diameter in mm, or an area in mm². The tool solves the AWG formula both ways and updates all fields.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AWG-to-diameter formula?

d(mm) = 0.127 × 92^((36 − AWG)/39); each 6 gauges roughly halves or doubles the diameter.

How is the area found?

Area(mm²) = π × (d/2)², computed automatically from the AWG diameter.

Does a higher AWG mean thicker wire?

No — a higher AWG number means a thinner wire, so 24 AWG is much finer than 12 AWG.
