Warranty policy generator — a limited warranty for your products

Name the products you cover, set the warranty period in months and choose repair, replacement or refund, and the tool drafts a limited warranty with exclusions and claim steps. It is a starting template, not legal advice; warranty and consumer guarantee laws differ by country.

How to use the warranty policy generator

  1. Enter Business or legal name, Website, Contact email, an optional Postal address and the Effective date.
  2. Describe the Products covered, for example “Northwind desk lamps”.
  3. Set the Warranty period (months) (1–600; default 24) and the Remedy: Repair, Repair or replace, or Repair, replace or refund.
  4. List Exclusions (one per line; blank = standard list) and tick Transferable to later owners if second owners are covered.
  5. Copy or download warranty-policy.md and put it with your product documents.

What it does and when to use it

Use it if you make or sell physical products and want to promise to fix defects for a set time. The document is headed “Limited Warranty” and has sections on what is covered, what you will do, what is not covered, how to make a claim (three numbered steps by email), limitations and contact details. Left blank, the exclusions list covers normal wear and tear, accidents and misuse, use against the instructions, and cosmetic damage.

It does not cover a “full” warranty, extended or paid service plans, shipping costs for claims, how long repairs take, or software and services. For change-of-mind returns, use the return policy generator; for delivery rules, the shipping policy generator.

How it works

The tool fills a fixed text with your answers in your browser; nothing is uploaded. The period is printed in months with the right singular or plural. The remedy changes one sentence: “repair the product”, “repair or replace the product”, or “repair or replace the product, or refund the purchase price if neither is practical”. If you type exclusions, they replace the standard list completely.

Worked examples

Desk lamps, defaults. The cover clause promises freedom from defects “for 24 months from the date of original purchase”, and the remedy is “repair or replace the product”. The four standard exclusions start with “Normal wear and tear.”

E-bike chargers, six months, repair only. Products “Northwind e-bike chargers”, 6 months, Repair, exclusions “Batteries” and “Water damage”, transferable ticked. The result says “Northwind e-bike chargers will be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for 6 months” and “This warranty applies only to the original purchaser and to anyone they transfer the product to.”

Limits and tips

  • Repair-only wording. With Repair chosen, the text says that repaired products stay covered for the rest of the Warranty Period and does not mention replacements.
  • Implied warranties in the U.S. The FTC guide says anyone offering a written warranty cannot disclaim implied warranties, though a limited warranty may limit their length to the warranty period. Review the template’s “only warranty we give” line with this in mind.
  • Required details. The FTC guide lists what a written warranty must say in one document, including a statement about state-law rights. Check your final text against that list.
  • Laws differ by country. Treat the output as a draft.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to offer a warranty?
In the U.S., the FTC says the Magnuson-Moss Act does not require you to give a written warranty, but if you do, the law's rules apply. In the EU, consumers already have a legal guarantee of at least two years from the seller, whatever you offer on top.
Why is it called a "Limited Warranty"?
The FTC guide says written warranties on consumer products costing more than $10 must be labelled "full" or "limited". A full warranty must meet federal standards that this template does not try to meet, so the document is headed Limited Warranty.
Can my warranty be shorter than two years in the EU?
Your own commercial warranty can be any length, but Your Europe says it can never exclude or reduce the consumer's rights under the minimum two-year legal guarantee. The template includes a sentence saying the warranty does not limit consumer-law rights.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is a starting template. Have it checked against the law of each country where you sell.
