How to use the licence plate generator

  1. Choose a Format: UK (current: AB12 CDE), US — three letters, four digits (ABC-1234), US — California style (1ABC234), Germany (B AB 1234) or India (MH 12 AB 1234).
  2. For the UK, set the Registration year (UK age identifier), from 2001 to 2049.
  3. Set How many plates (up to 500) and press Generate.
  4. Copy the list. The warning under it is a reminder that these are examples only.

What it does and when to use it

Games, films, driving-school quizzes, car-park apps and number-plate recognition tests all need plates that look right. Typing them by hand produces obvious patterns, and copying real plates from photos exposes real owners. This tool gives you plausible-looking examples in five common layouts.

Typical uses are filling a mock parking or fleet database, labelling cars in an illustration, creating props for a video game, or testing a form field’s format check. For other vehicle data, the VIN generator makes 17-character vehicle numbers with a valid check digit. For drivers to go with the cars, use the fake name generator or a full bulk fake data table.

How it works

Every character is chosen with crypto.getRandomValues:

Format Pattern
UK two letters, the age identifier for the year (or the year + 50), a space, three letters
US three letters, a dash, four digits
California one digit 1–9, three letters, three digits
Germany a city code (such as B, M or HH), one or two letters, then a number of up to four digits, keeping the whole plate to eight characters
India a state code, a district number 01–50, one or two letters, four digits

The US, California, German and Indian layouts here leave out I, O and Q, which are easy to confuse with 1 and 0.

Worked examples

Sample output; yours will differ.

  • UK, year 2019: SW69 XNB, HV19 MKL and YG19 CPD. The 19 marks a March-to-August registration and 69 a September-to-February one.
  • India: TN 28 HK 7873 and WB 11 J 5074, with real state codes for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
  • Germany: M U 9580 (Munich) and L R 6869 (Leipzig).
  • California: 5XVM544 and 7VPU167.

Every list ends with the warning “Format examples only, for mock data and games…”.

Limits and tips

  • Only the main current layout of each country is offered; older series, special plates and other US states are not.
  • German umlaut letters and the round seals between city code and letters are not included.
  • Uniqueness is not checked, so a large batch may repeat a plate.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real registrations?
No. They are random strings in the right shape. A random combination can match a car that is really on the road, so never use one on a vehicle, in an advert or on a document. Displaying a false plate is illegal in most countries, and it can make an innocent owner receive fines.
What does the UK year setting change?
Current UK plates carry a two-digit age identifier. Cars registered from March use the last two digits of the year (26 for 2026) and cars registered from September add 50 (76 for 2026). The tool picks one of the two at random for the year you set, from 2001 to 2049.
Do the letters follow each country's rules?
Partly. UK plates use the letter groups the current system allows, and Indian plates use real state codes such as MH and KA. German plates use a short list of real city codes. Beyond that the letters are random, so a plate may use a combination that the authority would never issue.
Can I make a custom or personalised plate?
No. The tool only makes random examples. For a fixed text, type it yourself in your design.
