How to use the lorem ipsum generator
- Choose what to Generate: Paragraphs, Sentences or Words.
- Set How many, from 1 to 500.
- Leave Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” ticked for the familiar opening, or untick it for fully random text.
- Pick a Format: Plain text, HTML
<p>tags or Markdown, then press Generate. - Check the Words and Characters counts, then copy the text or download it as
lorem.txt,lorem.htmlorlorem.md.
What it does and when to use it
Placeholder text lets you judge a layout before the real copy exists. Developers also use it as test data. Word mode gives an exact count for checking a title that must wrap at 60 characters, or a card that clips after three lines. Sentence mode fills form fields and comments. Paragraph mode in HTML gives markup you can drop straight into a template.
If you need other test data, the random string generator makes IDs and tokens. The UUID v5 generator gives stable IDs for fixtures, and the slugify tool turns a fake title into a URL path.
How it works
The tool draws from a list of 62 lorem ipsum words, using your browser’s cryptographic random source (crypto.getRandomValues).
- Sentence: 6 to 14 random words. If it has more than 8 words, one comma is placed inside it. The first letter is capitalised and the sentence ends with a full stop.
- Paragraph: 4 to 7 sentences.
- Words: exactly the number you ask for, with the first one capitalised and no punctuation.
With the opener ticked, words mode replaces the first words with “lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit” (up to 8 words). The other modes replace the first sentence with the full opener. In HTML format, each paragraph becomes one <p> element. In sentence or word mode, the whole result is a single <p>.
Worked examples
Words, how many 5, opener ticked:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet
Words: 5
Characters: 26
Sentences, how many 1, opener ticked. This output is always the same, because the only sentence is the opener:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.
Words: 8
Characters: 56
Paragraphs, how many 2, HTML. The first paragraph always begins <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. and the rest is random. One run gave 124 words and 874 characters across two <p> lines.
Limits and tips
- Character counts include tags. In HTML format,
<p>and</p>count towards Characters but not Words. - Leave room for real copy. Final text and translations can be longer than your placeholder, so also test the layout with extra words.
- Do not ship it. Search for “lorem” before you go live; placeholder text left on a public page looks broken to readers.
