What is ASCII?

The American Standard Code for Information Interchange, a 7-bit encoding assigning codes 0-127 to letters, digits, punctuation and control characters.

What are control characters?

Codes 0-31 are non-printable control codes such as NUL (0), TAB (9), LF (10) and CR (13) used to control text flow and devices.

What comes after 127?

Codes 128-255 are 'extended ASCII' and vary by code page; standard ASCII covers only 0-127.
